Modern Update Transforms Backyard Into Inviting Garden Design
Our clients had a passion for modern design but felt like their backyard definitely didn’t show it. While their landscape boasted some beautiful trees, the majority of the yard was taken up by a large patch of grass. This seemed like a total waste of space to our clients & they dreamed of a much more dynamic space. They wanted a landscape design that would create a true outdoor living space. They also wanted a landscape design that would honor their love of modern design elements.
We began the process of transforming our client’s backyard into a beautiful new landscape design by completely removing the overbearing grass footprint. Just doing this felt like it opened up a world of opportunities. Next, we focused on creating an outdoor living space in the new garden design. For this, we wanted areas that were more functional that their turf grass had been. We decided to form & pour large concrete pavers to create an extended patio space. This more than doubled their usable outdoor space & gave a more contemporary look than traditional concrete would.
In addition to the large square pavers, we also poured a number of circular pavers in varying sizes. This gave a subtle break in form but repeated the finish of the other pavers. This also makes it possible so that you can travel to another patio within the garden along this decorative path. Within the joints of these formed & poured pavers, we utilized a greyer colored stone with the square pavers & a blacker colored stone around the circular pavers. This again reinforced the beautiful contrast between the two shapes of the pavers.
In addition to the hardscape additions, we wanted to make these spaces more inviting as well. We accomplished this in a number of ways. First, we added a modern firepit feature to the new patio space. This created an immediate draw to the area & the shape perfectly fit the style of the new landscape design. We went with a burnt orange color to pop against the concrete & match some of the rustic tones that were present in the existing landscape features (pots, etc.). We also added a number of large market umbrellas to add additional shade to the seating area. Once again, we opted for a rust color tone to match the other elements.
After incorporating fire & shade, we focused on another essential element: water. We selected a pair of beautiful fountain pots to add the relaxing sounds & visuals of falling water to the landscape design. The pots themselves boast a bold metallic like color that further compliments the colors & tones of the property. It also leaps out at you against another change we made: painting the perimeter walls black. This subtle change can make such a big impact on how your property ‘feels’. It will also make the colors of your trees, plants, & fountains so much more vibrant!
Finally, we addressed the general landscape planters to complete the backyard transformation. We took advantage of the shade that our client’s existing trees offered & used a mixture of ornamental grasses, Azaleas, ferns & Lily Turf to give a lush vibe to the landscape design. In keeping with the more modern aesthetic, we kept the planting palette simple. But, while the garden’s planting mix may be simple it lacks nothing in rhythm & volume. Everywhere you turn, you are greeted with a unique blend of concrete, stone, & lush plantings.
After lots of hard work & careful design, we transformed our client’s boring backyard into a stunning & inviting garden.
