Pool Remodel Transforms Backyard

As a firm that specializes in design/build projects we have a passion for building projects from the ground up. However, we are equally as passionate about taking existing properties & giving them a ‘new lease on life’. In fact, some of our most favorite projects have involved taking a client’s existing swimming pool or landscape & transforming it into their dream outdoor destination.

This was definitely the case when our clients contact us to spearhead their swimming pool remodel. They had lived in their home for a number of years & the pool was definitely showing its age. Its dated tile & brick coping also made it seem like a relic from years ago. Our clients wanted an update that would once again make their swimming pool a beautiful centerpiece of their backyard.

We began this dramatic swimming pool remodel by addressing the pool deck. A swimming pool deck is such a critical component to the overall pool design. It sets the immediate tone for the look & style of the pool. The existing swimming pool deck was a basic salt finish concrete. Our clients wanted a more contemporary option for the decking however they were conscious of not wanting to overspend on the decking material. We always want to be respectful of clients’ budgetary concerns. Therefore, we made sure to walk our clients through their many decking options & their associated costs.

In considering these factors, we came up with a simple yet beautiful solution. We installed a broom finish grey concrete with ‘diamond’ joints throughout the deck. The placement of the joints gives the concrete a much richer feel almost like large pavers. Our clients also loved the fact that this finish gave the swimming pool deck a paver-look while being a fraction of the cost of real pavers. We also replaced the dated brick pool nose with a concrete coping to match. We used a shiner edge to the coping that also mimicked the rich look of a concrete precast coping.

Next, we looked at materials that would be complimentary for the new pool tile & veneer stone. Along with the perimeter tile, the spa had an elevated section & there are step risers along deck that would all need to be updated. Our clients wanted nothing to do with the dated look of their old mosaic tiles. We again leaned into the more modern aesthetics with neutral colors & greys for these selections. The veneer stone is a gorgeous, rugged stone with clean lines & variations of grey coloring. The tile selection also has these beautiful grey color tones as well.

The interior finish of the pool was the last item to be addressed in this dramatic pool remodel. We opted for a beautiful white plaster finish. While this may seem like a retro selection, this color has become incredibly popular in recent years. The extremely light tones give the swimming pool an incredibly welcoming, cool blue color. This interior finish married perfectly with the lighter grey tones of the concrete deck, stone & tile selections.

A final finishing touch to the project was adding new deck umbrellas to the swimming pool. We look at these type of accessories & furnishings as critical pieces to the final puzzle. While it may seem counterintuitive, this is where we felt a dramatic color might be perfect. We added three stunning red patio umbrellas to add shade around the swimming pool deck. This gives the swimming pool deck the splashy color of a resort swimming pool. They also offer a ton of shade to the pool deck’s seating areas & the pool’s lounge shelf.

Finally, our client’s pool update is complete & they absolutely love the result!
